How To Get Your Mojo Back - When I Grow Up
How To Get Your Mojo Back - When I Grow Up This is a guest post from Natalie, who graciously shares 4 ways that she took her mojo back. Yup you gotsta make it happen yourself, people! Inspirational Art Print by Studio Mela I quit my day job in March of this year. At the time, I was constantly busy â" working a full-time job, then coming home and working a part-time job to help me save enough money to quit the full-time gig. I did tons of different things at the full-time job and my favorite part of it, coordinating events (which was supposed to be the smallest part) took up most of my time. The first two weeks after quitting were great â" I was able not to work 14+ hours a day and not to have to think about going somewhere that sucked out my energy. And thenâ¦I realized that I just wasnât busy anymore, at least not in the way I liked. I still had the part-time job (now doing full-time hours), but nothing else going on. Thatâs just not my style â" I like days where Iâm doing different things, moving from one place to another, varying my workflow. Then I found out I was pregnant (!) and that first trimester sapped a lot of my energy and motivation. I was glad, temporarily, that I only had one obligation. But now Iâm back and itching to get started on new projects, finding a job that I love, and generally feeling like Iâm contributing to society and my family. So this post is about getting my mojo back â" a shortlist of what works for me when I need to get motivated: 1. Taking opportunities â" this is huge. I donât buy âThe Secretâ, but I do think the Universe works to give you what you need. This opportunity to guest blog for Michelle is one that Iâm taking! Iâve been trying to blog regularly (which fell by the wayside) but Iâm seeing this as a great chance to get me back to writing. Iâve also had â" just in the last few days â" the opportunity to work with a local organization to consult in arts programming and events coordination (my dream job!). You can bet I want in on that! Do I think itâs the perfect fit? Maybe not, but Iâd rather take this chance and be one step closer to my goal and learn something than watch âAmerican Pickersâ all day. 2. Resetting goals â" things change and that means goals change. Itâs useful to reevaluate goals as needed â" maybe itâs every six months for you, or just whenever you feel stuck or blah. Six months ago my goals were to leave my job and to save enough money to make leaving possible. Obviously, those goals have changed by now! 3. Schedules and Lists â" Iâm a scheduler and listmaker. Maybe this is because Iâm a big picture person who likes doing work that involves a lot of details (event coordination) so I need tools that will help me get organized. Scheduling with deadlines keeps me motivated since Iâm clearly working towards something and a to-do list works because I love crossing things off! 4. Following through when thereâs momentum â" when thereâs energy and momentum I find I have to just ride the wave. Itâs the same idea as the two minute rule â" if it takes two minutes to complete something, just do it. Usually that feeling of accomplishment will carry you through to the next thing. So thatâs my plan for getting re-motivated! How do you get your mojo back? 6 Strategies to Prove You Deserve a Raise
6 Strategies to Prove You Deserve a RaiseIts the end of a productive year, and youre aya you deserve a raise. After all, no one knows better than you do about what youve accomplished this year. Now the key is making sure your employer knows that, as well. Whether youwantto ask for a raise straight-up or negotiate a bigger one during an annual review, there are steps you can take to put you in a better position to increase your paycheck. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Know your market value. Its entirely possible youre being underpaid relative to other people in similar positions. Its also possible that your desire for a 43% increase is totally unrealistic. Thus, its time to hit the Internet. Do as much research as you can to determine what your role is worth at a range of companies. Sites like Glassdoor and PayScale can be excellent resources to give you a sense of what others are making in your field. Knowing what you can reasonably exp ect is crucial in preparing your raise request.Look at your companys overall health. Is your company in cost-cutting mode? Did it have a banner year with high-profile clients? Understanding how your company is doing in general can help you figure out where to set your raise expectations. If it hasnt been a great year for your employer, a huge salary bump just may not be feasible or likely, so shoot for a moderate one instead. This shouldnt stop you from asking for a raise, but it can help you figure out what to ask for. If your company is struggling, acknowledge that in your request I know were cutting back, but Id still like to discuss a salary increase.Dont wait for them to come to you.Use the years end or a scheduled wertmiger zuwachs review process to let your boss know that youd like to discuss salary and career growth. Schedule some time to talk about it with your manager, or at least to touch base before a more formal meeting.Practice negotiating.Grab a friend to practice your spiel of reasons you deserve a raise. Have the person be as tough a counter-negotiator as possible, so youll be ready for any kind of resistance. Know your accomplishments and strengths cold, so you can rattle them off when asked. Try different ways of working them into conversation so they dont come off like a recited list.Have others sing your praises. If you can walk into the room with kudos from other people, it shows your boss youre an essential team member. If youve received any grateful emails or nice compliments from colleagues or clients over the past year, nows the time to dig through your email archive to find them.Dont make it personal. This is not the time to bust out sob stories about your finances. This raise is about being compensated specifically for your work and your role in the company. Similarly, dont try to exploit whatever personal relationship you may have with your boss. If you two go out for happy hour drinks twice a week or snark on each others Facebook, th at needs to stay separate from your professional performance evaluation. No raise is guaranteed, but being extra-double prepared for the discussion, as well as having realistic goals in mind, will show that youre ready for the next step up.

6 Things No One Tells You About Going Back to Work After a Career Break
6 Things No One Tells You About Going Back to Work After a Career Break As a single working mother, I have experienced the ups and downs of juggling a career and a family. Although I took a learn as I go approach, there were things I wish I had prepared for before I went back to work after being home for several years. Going back into the workforce requires some preparation ahead of time to make your transition as smooth and productive as possible, especially when it comes to these six things no one tells you about returning to the workforce.1. Job descriptions dont always accurately portray the level to which you need to know specific programs.I learned this the hard way when I took a job that required basic Excel skills, only to find what was considered basic to someone else was entirely different than my definition. Before going back to work, get trained in as much technology, especially MS Office applications and social media, as you can. Times have changed, technology is moving at the speed of sound and you must stay relevant for the duration of your career. Courses are available zugnglich via YouTube, Lynda.com and local colleges.2. Networking is important to finding your footing. The years between jobs offered the perfect time to build up my network via online sites and networking groups, except for one small problem I didnt realize the importance of networking.Your network is critical to your success and time should be set aside daily to work on establishing it. Spending 20 minutes a day on LinkedIn in a meaningful, intentional way can start to broaden your reach and create a safety net of people who support you. There are also local groups that meet early in the day, so you can network before tackling your other duties. You better believe that if someone commits to being there before work, they are serious about connecting. You should be too.3. You need a network of emergency caretakers.Abedrngnisher area I gave too little thought was support at home fo r my kids. Children may not apply to everyone, but if you have anyonerelying on you, read on. There were sick days, snow days, delayed openings, half days, missed busses, coordination of practices and even the unforeseeable flat tire or an accident that I wasnt prepared for.You should have two or three (preferably stay-at-home, local individuals) that you can connect with and rely on. Make sure that you always give more than you take. I invited them for dinner or lunch on weekends, offered to drive double duty on Saturday nights (giving them a night off), took the late-night pick-ups more often and sent flowers, gift cards or baked cookies. Finding a way to contribute meaningfully into the lives of some local parents before you head back to work ensures whoever relies on you at home has coverage in the event of an emergency or delay. It also lets your boss and coworkers know that you respect your hours and responsibilities enough to make proper plans for these unexpected occurrences. elend everyone understands or appreciates the spontaneous use of PTO, and it can be a real career-killer if you continuously use it.4. You set the tone.Learning the right way to negotiate and understand your worth sets the tone for the entire interview process and beyond. Even a $5,000 increase in your negotiated annual salary can compound and translate to meaningful savings over time, which is why the company making the offer doesnt want to give it to youCareer coaches can also help with updating your resume and mock interview sessions. There are free resources available online that can help you lead with your best foot forward. You may even benefit from updating your style or refreshing some wardrobe items. A coach can help to address all of these areas quickly while bolstering your confidence. You are worth the investment.5. Its never too late to contribute to savings. If your new employer is offering a match, not contributing to your 401(k) plan is like throwing away free money. Pay yourself first and you will find ways to do without other, less important things. Its a discipline I wish I had instituted much earlier in the game.6. Mentors and sponsors are out there.Like networking, I never understood the importance of mentors or sponsors until it was almost too late. Mentorship is a valuable, enriching relationship that organically develops over time. Keeping your eyes open for a part who is where you want to be in the future and who naturally takes an interest in you is essential. Offering to help and assist them in any way you can is what will create a bond between you. Always make sure that you contribute meaningfully, are mindful of your mentors time and demonstrate the desire to pay mentorship forward to someone else.A sponsor differs somewhat in that its less of a development role and more of an Im in your corner and have your back relationship. He or she will throw your anthroponym in the hat when promotions open up inside your company, or make stra tegic introductions to key people within your organization. They notice your hard work, demonstrated excellence and go out of their way to push you along your career path.If you find yourself in a job where there is zero opportunity to find a mentor or sponsor, I encourage you to think about this vital part of career development. In my experience, without this type of internal support, it is not an easy climb up the rungs of your current companies ladder.Preparing to transition back to work can seem like an overwhelming time, but it doesnt have to be. Put the resources and mindset you need to thrive in place well before you sign an offer letter. Your career will thank you
